The theme of ambition in Macbeth

A key theme in William Shakespeares Macbeth is ambition. Ambition finds its most substantive expressions in the plays two main char typifyers, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. It is also in the lesser characters of Macduff and Malcolm. The catalyst for Macbeths ambition is the witches interference in Macbeths invigoration and their prophesies which pervade his mind. Lady Macbeth, whose ambition is even stronger than Macbeths, often persuades Macbeth to act on his ambitions. It is Macbeths mission to gain power - his ambition - which in the long run leads to his tragic demise.
