Statement of Purpose
I was educated in anthropology, focusing on the socio- pagan aspects of what it is to be charitables – social institutions, relations of individuals to others, ritual and symbolism, and cultural values. My master’s level coursework and research within liturgical Studies has further stomached me to apply anthropological methods to the study of the liturgical rites of the Christian church. During my studies, I have maintained a strong regularise point average in my major fields, as rise up as in courses not normally taken by students of anthropology or theology. It is my hope that this multidisciplinary approach to my education has not moreover prepared me for graduate study in anthropology, but has in similar manner afforded me the opportunity to look at doddering problems in advanced ways and to see new problems hidden in old solutions. Most importantly, however, my education has fostered within me a greater mind of ways to look at the world. I would like to keep abreast a career in teaching and research that addresses the human condition by studying the cultural variation amidst peoples and their uses of symbolic media to impart meanings onto their worlds.
A career in anthropology engages the fundamentally creative ability of humans, the recognition of which is necessary for a humanitarian understanding of the world. However, by recognizing the creative ability of individuals, one essential not dismiss the wider social forces that shape the conditions in which the human endeavor is undertaken. A career in anthropology will allow me to further our understanding of the relationship between individual creative thinking and social circumscription, as well as educating future students in this crucial dialectic.
Specifically, my interests focus on the use of ritual, particularly ritual that is demarcated as religious ritual. The specific group that I would like to examine is the Chaldean Catholics.
