The Great Debaters
The film the Great Debaters was a wonderful true story on the view group of Wiley College in Texas. Wiley college was an any black college and the picture was set in 1935(Robert Eisele.) The main characters include Melvin Thompson, the coach, Samantha, the only female ever to be on the team up, Henry, and James, a 14 year old genius. prof Thompson (Denzel Washington) recruits these 3 from tryouts; they are what he considers the best. The movie continues with a downcast romance and a firsthand realization of racism. As the movie comes to an end Wiley College debates Harvard University and succeeds with a victory. The main Character Professor Thompson is a true leader in this film. He uses different leaders traits and characteristics to lead his team to victory.
I chose to do this film, as it sincerely interested me and entertained me. The story was captivating and had many aspects of leaders pictured, not just in professor Thompson but in the team members as well. Henry showed great leadership qualities when his team mate Melvin decided he was not going to debate leaving it up to Henry. Some of the leadership traits he portrayed at that moment were charismatic leadership, know yourself and seeking improvement.
The all in all team including Henry used the five factors of management when preparing for their full-grown debate against Harvard University. They planned their strategy, organized how they would deliver their debates, they directed themselves and for each one former(a), controlling, and finally when they won they celebrated and evaluated their debate.
Along with Henry and the other team members their coach was their main leader and inspirer. He had in person problems with the community and was actually arrested. Even though he had all these things going on in his life he nonetheless was there to support and guide his team.
